Level Up 2.0 · The Players’ Lab12-session Course

Level Up 2.0 is a 12-session acting lab: you learn the craft of acting and, as an ensemble, devise an original show for a live audience.

This is not a beginner’s drama class. It is a working ensemble led by director Oriana Ng: scenes, character work, improvisation and constructive feedback, building toward a performance in February.

The Situation

You’ve shown us who you are in performance. Last season you stepped on stage, held a room, said something true and were seen. The question now is not whether you can perform — it’s who else you can become. Acting as a craft gives you the tools to step out of your own story and into someone else’s, intentionally and with full commitment.

You might recognize yourself here:

• you’ve had a taste of live performance and want to come back for more

• you’ve wondered how the movie stars do it — and whether you could, too

• you have feelings and ideas with no outlet in your daily life

• you’ve contemplated being an artist, but life led you elsewhere

• you want to be seen and heard

The Practices

You will follow core acting training, with exercises drawn from different acting methods. You will workshop scenes and receive constructive feedback, while developing your own voice through guided writing and improvisation, character and relationship work rooted in your body, instincts and play. The craft sharpens the voice, the voice feeds into the craft, and together they grow into original material for the performance.

In this course we practice through:

• given circumstances, character and relationship building

• relaxation, sensory and imagination work — Stanislavski, Strasberg, Adler, Meisner, Michael Chekhov

• wants and needs: what drives a scene

• scene work on film and theatre texts, and on your own material

• guided improvisation and automatic-writing prompts

• devising techniques that grow into an original show

What to expect

The course unfolds over four stages, shaped by the group as we go

Sessions 1–3 · Nov 10 – Dec 1

EXPLORE

What is acting, really? We find out by doing it, not by talking about it. You’ll learn to step into a character, meet the people and spaces around you honestly, and test the limits of who you think you are. By the end of this stage, every student has created an original character.

Sessions 4–6 · Dec 8 – Jan 5

BUILD

The frame is built; now we fill it with specificity. You’ll work on scenes, learn lines and dive into guided improvisation. Tools to broaden your imagination, awaken your senses and develop your emotional range — and your original character returns in new situations, with new colors and layers.

Sessions 7–9 · Jan 12 – Jan 26

SHAPE

Everything we’ve built comes together. We weave characters, relationships and movement into a larger narrative of short scenes drawn from our own original work.

Sessions 10–12 + performance · from Feb 2

REHEARSE

We rehearse the final performance and decide on props, costume and music. We polish the show as one piece — and learn the difference between working for ourselves and working toward an audience.
