Laboratory of AffectFor anyone who wants to move and explore the body's capacities

A two-hour movement workshop with Yulia Linnik, theatre artist and curator, Fulbright MA student in Performance Studies at NYU Tisch.

Explore the possibilities of physical interaction with others. A laboratory of games, performative structures and movement practices, inspired by Brian Massumi’s theory of affect: the body’s capacity to affect and be affected. No previous movement experience or training is required.

The Situation

We will interact with one another through movement, explore our bodies and their possibilities, and discover their hidden dimensions: affects. How can we affect other bodies, and how can we allow ourselves to be affected by others?

This may be for you if:

• you’re curious about improvisation

• you want your body to feel freer and more open

• you want to stay curious about other people

• you’re looking for partnership, on stage and in life

• you’ve never moved on a stage before, and that’s fine

The Practices

We will create a laboratory space where we interact with one another through games, performative structures, physical exercises, and movement practices. We will pay attention to the changes that emerge within the group and in the space between bodies in contact.

How we play:

• Authentic Movement: free movement through space, following the body’s impulses

• consciously changing movement patterns: noticing habitual ways of moving and shifting them

• your perfect gesture: create it, then deconstruct it through repetition

• impulses: responding through movement to a partner’s word, breath or physical impulse

• games and performative structures

• noticing what changes in the group and between bodies in contact
